Not all remote jobs are structured the same way. The difference between a W-2 employee and a 1099 contractor goes beyond a title, it affects take home pay, taxes, and more. Here is how to figure out which setup fits your life the best.

Option 1: W-2 Remote Employee

A W-2 remote position is similar to a traditional job, except your office is at home.

The Perks:

  • No Tax Surprises: Your employer calculates and automatically deducts federal taxes, Social Security, and Medicare from every check.
  • Benefits Package: W-2 roles often come with health insurance, retirement plans, paid sick leave, and paid time off.
  • Washington State Protections: As a W-2 worker living in Washington, you gain access to things like WA FMLA and unemployment benefits.
  • Equipment Provided: Most companies ship you a computer or provide a monthly stipend for your internet bill.

The Trade-Offs:

  • Fixed Hours: You generally have to work set hours, like a typical 9-5 and you report directly to a manager.

Option 2: 1099 Independent Contractor

A 1099 contractor essentially operates like self employment, you are hired for a specific task, but you are allowed to choose when to do the work, as long as its completed on time.

The Perks:

  • Total Freedom: You control your daily routine and work hours as long as you meet project deadlines.
  • Multiple Clients: You can contract for multiple companies at once, allowing you to control your income, and hours.
  • Tax Write-Offs: You can deduct eligible business expenses, like internet, computers, software, and other expenses from your taxable income.

The Trade-Offs:

  • Self-Employment Taxes: You are responsible for paying your taxes!
  • No Safety Net: No paid vacation, no company healthcare, and no guaranteed unemployment.

How to Decide:
Choose a W-2 job if you want a stable paycheck, health benefits, and a regular schedule.
Choose 1099 if you want the freedom to set your own hours, build a client base, and don't mind keeping track of your business expenses and taxes.

💡
The Golden Rule: Remember the 1099 pay is not all yours, you need to set 25-30% of each payment for taxes!
